Corporate Social Investment ABALIMI BEZEKHAYA (“Farmers of Hope”)Together with our partner FIRST POTATO DYNAMICS group > groep, in South Africa, C.Meijer B.V has been supporting the Abalimi Bezekhaya (“Farmers of Hope”) project. Abalimi Bezekhaya was set up in 1982. The organization works in the underdeveloped townships of Cape Town. Abalimi’s aim is to reduce poverty in these townships by supporting micro – agriculture in the local community allotments. Abalimi means: "the Planters" in Xhosa, the predominant language among our target community. We assist individuals, groups and community based organisations to initiate and maintain permanent organic food growing and nature conservation projects as the basis for sustainable lifestyles, self-help job creation, poverty alleviation and environmental renewal. On the 18th July the FPD group did their part for Nelson Mandela Day. We went to St Josephs Home for chronically ill children in Montana. Our project for the day was gardening, the garden in the children ward was in desperate need of some TLC. Armed with plants, trees and smiles we arrived and jumped straight in. After afew hours work, assisted by many wiling hands, the garden was transformed, and will also provide food for the children as potatoes were planted.
